THE LANGUAGE OF BROWS.

Overview

For a second year group module ‘Fashion Anthropology’, we were tasked to create an exhibition piece focusing on a meaningful fashion item. ‘The Language of Brows’, was developed, exploring the relationship between identity and fashion through visual semiotics and primary research.

As a group, we chose to focus on eyebrows as our fashion item, recognising their powerful yet often overlooked role in shaping personal identity, emotional expression, and cultural beauty standards. Throughout the project, we explored how eyebrows function as visual signifiers across time, social groups, and personal experiences.

By combining qualitative data collection, theoretical research, and visual storytelling, we aimed to produce an outcome that communicated the deep emotional connections individuals have with their brows.

Our final work consisted of a conceptual photoshoot and an accompanying research poster, both designed to visually articulate the emotional, symbolic, and cultural narratives uncovered in our research.

Outcomes

The final outcome was a curated photoshoot translating our research findings into a visual language. We styled models with bold, expressive brows and matching coloured eyeshadow, using colour symbolism to reflect emotions identified in our data. Through model interactions and poses, we referenced themes of generational bonds, resilience, and emotional storytelling.

The resulting images were presented in our group exhibition, alongside an A2 research poster featuring our methodology table, infographic data visualisation, a hero image from the photoshoot, and a gallery visit case study.
